Case Study:

Andrew Marti

Director, Father, and Avid Reader

Tell us what you do and how personal knowledge management plays a part of your work or personal life.

I've always been an avid reader and notetaker, with the goal of eventually writing. I didn't have much discipline to either. PKM has had a big role in organizing my ideas and thoughts and has been a launchpad for increasing my writing output. I have a goal for this year of two posts a week, which I could never do without Obsidian and PKM.

How would you describe the Linking Your Thinking Workshop to a friend?

So in my case, I'm a big reader. I read a lot. But the things I was reading were forgotten. They were lost in a journal. They might have been buried somewhere in Evernote. I want to write and share my ideas more, and the Linking Your Thinking Workshop is a great approach to bringing all of this knowledge and all of these ideas together to help me make new connections within these ideas and in turn, use these ideas in new ways.

What's something that you approach differently because of what you've learned from the workshop?

It's not just enough to take notes. I've learned I need to work with my notes on a regular basis. I need to find ways to stir up those old ideas and bring them back to the forefront. Learning (and using) techniques like Maps of Content, Dataviews, and Libraries, have been so helpful to create a valuable repository of my own thoughts, and in turn, this has been SO valuable in my writing and creative efforts.

What advice would you give to someone who's considering the LYT Workshop or to a first time student?

Lean In. Try out these ideas. Start making that MOC. Show your content frequently. Experiment. Make connections. It will pay off!

Any other comments or recommendations about the LYT Workshop?

The techniques and the sessions are great, but it's the community that is the most valuable. I'm now a part of an amazing group of diverse thinkers that I interact with to this day, and they're still giving me inspiration, tips, and ideas. My journey to make more of what I learned and what I read...it's not unique. So it was great to see so many other people on this same journey and to learn from them within the workshop to share with them. That was for me the greatest takeaway from the workshop.

The Linking Your Thinking Workshop is a great approach to bringing all of this knowledge together...to help me make new connections within these ideas and in turn, use these ideas in new ways.
